Thermonator: The Matter Maker
Thermonator is a STEM educational game made for FableVision (Boston, MA, USA) in early 2018. Its intended purpose is to give students a physics sandbox where they can manipulate properties of particles and can stop/play/replay particles in motion. It is being released on Android and iOS in May 2018.
Players learn about different states of matter by comparing one or two groups of particles moving in a sandbox environment, each group with its own velocity, bounce mechanics, and attraction. The sandbox itself is always in a frozen or heated state, allowing the player to stop particles, change properties of one or more groups, and then play using the new settings.
Gravity can be toggled on or off as a global modifier affecting all groups of particles. When toggled on, it effects a downward force on all particles in addition to their velocity.
Whenever the play button is pressed, a snapshot is taken of all of the particles positions and velocity. During play, a player can press the replay button to reset all particles to their snapshot and view particles moving from that snapshot.
The settings for each particle group only affects that group. By default a divider separates each group; this can be lowered by the player either before or during play and allows particles to interact with each other. This allows players to simulate interactions between particles exhibiting different properties, such as a gas next to a solid or a liquid.
